Planning your Halloween party menu? Beyond the cauldron of punch and bowls of candy corn, every ghoulish gathering needs a savory centerpiece. This year, skip the complicated recipes and summon a dish that’s both a spooky treat and a crowd-pleasing showstopper: the Jack-o’-Lantern Detroit-Style Pizza.

This a fun and delicious twist on the pizza that seems to be taking over America these days – and that’s because it’s so perfectly engineered for a party!
Why Detroit-Style is Frighteningly Good for Parties
Forget floppy, round pies that are messy to serve. Detroit-style pizza is my absolute favorite to bring to a potluck or prepare to kick off a party. Baked in a rectangular pan, it boasts a thick, focaccia-like crust that’s pillowy on the inside and impossibly crispy on the outside. Its sturdy shape is perfect for cutting into shareable squares, making it easy for guests to grab a piece without plates or forks.

But the real magic for our Halloween twist is the signature “sauce on top” method. Traditionally, this pizza is covered edge-to-edge with cheese, then finished with two or three “racing stripes” of red sauce. We’re just giving that final step a spooky makeover.
Creating Your Halloween Detroit Pizza Masterpiece
The beauty of this pizza lies in its simplicity and visual punch. Here’s how you bring your monster to life:
- Prepare the Canvas: Press your favorite pizza dough into a well-oiled, rectangular Detroit-style pan (a 9×13 inch baking pan is actually what I pretty much always use – and you can fit two in your oven).
- The Cheese Blanket: Top the dough with a generous layer of cheese. For an authentic Detroit pie, use sliced or grated Brick cheese, but Muenster or Mozzarella works great too. Then add extra sharp white cheddar around the very edges of the pan. This is what creates the legendary “frico”—a dark, crispy, caramelized cheese crust that is unbelievably delicious.

- Shape the Jack-o’-Lantern: Now for the fun part! Instead of the traditional sauce stripes, use a spoon or a squeeze bottle to carefully apply your pizza sauce on top of the cheese in a jack-o’-lantern pattern. Two simple triangle eyes or spooky tear drop eyes (like I did) and a big, toothy grin are all you need. Don’t worry about perfection; a slightly crooked smile just adds to the charm!
- Bake and Behold: Bake according to your recipe until the crust is golden, the cheese is bubbly, and that frico edge is a deep, crispy brown.
Halloween Party Pizza – A Treat for Ghouls of All Ages
By sticking to the simple, classic toppings of just cheese and sauce, you create a pizza that appeals to everyone, from the pickiest little monsters to the most discerning ghouls. It’s a guaranteed hit that looks like you spent hours crafting a complex dish.
If you want to elevate the flavor a little bit, you can try adding some fresh basil for the face! This also comes in handy if you had some trouble shaping your Jack O’Lantern!

So this Halloween, add a slice of spooky fun to your buffet table. The Jack-o’-Lantern Detroit-Style Pizza is easy, delicious, and destined to be the talk of the party long after the last piece has vanished. Happy haunting and happy baking!

Todd’s cooking skills have revolved around the grill since about age 12, when he developed a love for grilling and took over for Mom at the BBQ. He worked at Wendy’s and at Earl’s Tin Palace (a restaurant chain in Canada) but never really did any sort of baking…until he and Heather started making pizza together! Now he’s often making dough in the mornings and pizza in the evenings.
